Folger Stable School Program
Folger Stable
James Folger II, president of the Folger coffee company, purchased property in Woodside in 1902. Architect Arthur Brown, Jr. designed buildings for the estate. The Folger Stable is a reminder of the Great Estates era, when millionaires enjoyed the country lifestyle in San Mateo County.
Tour
Students take a walk back in time as they see the different historic buildings on the property. Then, they explore the carriage room to discover different uses of the land over time.
Hands-On Activities
The hands-on history program features four activity stations:
- Clean tack and saddle a "horse."
- Stamp a leather bookmark.
- Build a stone wall.
- Press apple cider.

- Geared to third and fourth graders.
- History-Social Science Content Standards: 3.3, 3.5, 4.4.
- 2.25-hour program.
- Available on Wednesdays in the fall; Wednesdays and Fridays in the spring.
- Six chaperones required to assist with hands-on activities.
- 2012-2013 Fee: The cost is $127.50 for a San Mateo County class of up to 30 students; 147.50 for other counties. Fee applies to one class per program.
- 2013-2014 Fee: The cost is $130 for a San Mateo County class of up to 30 students; $150 for other counties. Fee applies to one class per program.
Size Limitations
To protect the historic site and for better quality of programming, school programs at the Folger Stable are limited to one class.
Rain
The school program occurs rain or shine. Some modification of activities occurs on rainy days.
General Information
Folger Stable is part of Wunderlich Park, a San Mateo County Park. The San Mateo County Historical Association only operates the school programs at the site.
